Common Lawn Pests and How To Control Them

Disease and grass insect pests can be prevented or cured by following a few basic steps. Be sure to set your low mower height to 1-1/2 inches, have a sharp blade, have the proper fertilizing, drainage and water. Even following each and everything above still can bring on unwanted insect attacks.  So what pest is your culprit?

Chinch Bugs: One of the most difficult bugs to kill and discover within your lawn is chinch bugs. The bugs are small flat bugs that are about the size of a grain of rice. The baby ones are brick red, but turn a brown color in their middle age. Then, as adults, they turn a black color with white wings. They create a lot of damage to lawns and plants. If your grass is infected it will have patches of brown with a reddish middle. The outer circle will be a yellow color. If you pull on the grass it will remain firmly rooted. The picture to the left shows what a lawn will look like if they are not dealt with quick and properly.

Sod Webworms- Irregular shaped brown colored areas of grass are an indication that you have sod webworms. A good way to test for sod webworms is to mix two teaspoons of pyrethrum in one gallon of water and apply it one square inch of the affected area. Within a ten minute period of time if you see gray worms coming to the surface you have an infestation. If the infestation has went on for a long period of time you may see small lawn moths, this too, is a good indication.

White Grubs- Patches of brown dying grass that went pulled on will come up like a doormat. When the lifted patch is exposed you will see fat, white colored worms that are generally curled up like shrimp.

Now that we have examined and identified the pests you might have, what can you do about them?

The best insecticide that I know of to get rid of chinch bugs and sod webworms has the active ingredient Bifenthrin. This company sells the best product on the market Talstar PL Granules Insecticide.

The product works to control ants, fire ants, spiders, fleas ,ticks, worms, crickets and almost all other lawn insects such as chinch bugs and sod webworms. Can be used on lawns, landscape, gardens, perimeters of buildings. Protection for 2-3 months. Also works on scorpions. It is safe to use around birds and pets..

For white grubs the bifenthrin doesn’t work. I found that this product St Gabriel Laboratories 10Oz Conc Milky Spore 80010-9 Grub Control works extremely well.
I love the fact it is 100% Organic and safe to use around pets and children. Once the spore is released it will last for 15-20 years. Perfectly safe to use in your garden.

You can limit all your lawn pests with just two products the first year. After the first year you will only have one to purchase. However, practicing a all of the tips in this guide will limit the chances of outbreaks.
