What Damage Do Slugs Do?

The pests can chew through leaves and stems of plants.  A slug can also eat clean through fruits and vegetables making holes in crops and leaf vegetation with their rasping mouths.

Best Ways to Get Rid of Slugs


Traps

If you have an issue with earwigs, slugs or snails, a trap works well.  You can purchase slug traps or make your own.

Slug Bait Traps

Step 1: You dig a hole somewhere look to a plant, place the container into the hole. Cover.

Step 2: Add one of the 3 liquid choices below.

1.) Add 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon yeast.
2.) Add 1/4 cup of beer
3.) 1/4 cup olive oil into the cup.


Step 3:
Cover the cup with a lid that has a few holes for the insects to crawl into but not out of.

Crushed Eggshells

Slugs are soft-bodied insects.  Using crushed eggshells creates discomfort for the snails.  They may turn around when they reach an eggshell barrier.  Eggshells break down naturally and add nutrients to the soil.

Oak Leaf Mulch

Have oak leaves in your yard?  Try to crush up oak leaves for mulch around your plants.  Slugs do not like oak leaves.

Copper Tape

This product is excellent if you have raised beds and flowers pots. You can wrap the tape around anything. It is non-toxic and no chemicals.

Copper Slug Tape

Slugs and snails you not like to cross the tape because it gives off a sensation that they do not like when their slime secretions come in contact with the tape. Making them turn the other way.
