Making your yard hummingbird pleasant – How can you get hummingbirds to visit your yard year after year?
It’s not as difficult as one might imagine. If you provide your feathered friends with a reliable food source they will come back at visit you throughout the years.
1.) Grow Plants That Have Nectar Hummingbirds Like
Hummingbirds consume twice their body weight in nectar each day. Having plenty of food sources from spring to fall in your yard help ensure they will visit you.

No area for creating a hummingbird flower garden? I bet you could repurpose an old wagon as a garden.
2.) Make Your Own Nectar
Besides adding flowering plants to your gardens, set up hummingbird feeders.
Make your own nectar instead of purchasing it. The store bought, artificial coloring isn’t good for the birds and making your own is simple.
I like to go with brass and glass feeders, so when the feeder expands in the sunlight it doesn’t attract ants.
Make Your Own Hummingbird Nectar
1 part white sugar
4 parts water
1.) Place the water into a saucepan over medium heat and let it come to a boil.
2.) Stir in sugar and boil the mixture for 30 seconds.
3.) Let cool and fill your feeder.
Refrigerate the rest for up to 1 week.
Use Fresh Nectar Every 2-3 Days
It is important to pour out any hummingbird nectar every three days. After three days it has a chance of growing harmful bacteria. Take down your feeder, DUMP OUT old nectar, wash entire feeder and then add fresh nectar.
3.) Limit Insecticides
Hummers are sensitive to chemicals because of their small size. Don’t spray chemicals to control garden pests. Ingesting harsh chemical could make them sick or kill them.
Cats and larger birds of prey are hummers predators.
- Have a few landing spots set up high for them to stop and view their feeding spots is helpful.
- Hang all feeders at least 6 feet off the ground so while they are perch at the feeders so cats don’t attack them.
5.) Provide Nesting Materials
Providing nesting materials for hummingbirds allowing them to build their nests easily. If you have materials readily available, they will nest in areas near you.
